After sweeping Southwestern Heights in Liberal Monday, the Redskins drove to Dodge City for a single game and had a rough start in a 13-1 loss.

Marco Alonso couldn’t make it out of the first inning. Alonso allowed 10 runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one. Only four of the runs were earned, and Blayden Betts came in to get the final out of the inning.

Liberal’s only run of the game came in the first inning when Aidan Schwindt reached on a single and later scored on a sacrifice RBI from Zayden Martinez.

Betts pitched a scoreless second inning but gave up a run in the third before he was relieved by Martinez.

Martinez pitched the final two innings and gave up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Liberal only managed four hits including two from Schwindt and a double from Brooks Kappelmann and a single from Xavier Porras.

The loss dropped Liberal to 11-8 on the season and 1-5 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Dodge City improved to 7-12 overall, 3-4 in the WAC.

Liberal will travel to Overland Park  Friday for a double header against Blue Valley West.

The Redskins will complete the regular season next week with a Tuesday home game against Dodge City and a home game Friday, May 7, against the Garden City Buffaloes.

The Redskins are currently the seventh seed in the 18-team Class 6A West Region.
