Ellen Marie Mitchell, 84 died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024 at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.
She was born Jan. 21, 1940 to Herbert and Mattie (Butler) Shafer.
She married Kenneth Wayne Mitchell Dec. 20, 1958. He preceded her in death April 20, 2024.
She worked as a bus paraprofessional for 14 years.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and American Legion in Liberal.
She enjoyed reading, sewing and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.
Some of her favorite memories were going to Laughlin, Nev. with her sister, Carol Jean – while their husbands were playing the slot machines, they would be running all over the town grabbing a cup of coffee or even some new jewelry.
Survivors include children, Shurlene Mann and Jeff Mitchell; stepsisters, Irene Gartrell and Edith Miller; stepbrothers, Bobby and Roy Winters; three half-brothers: Donnie, David and Terry Shafer; grandchildren, Jacob Mann and Shannon Mann; three step-grandchildren: Rex, Artt and Lance; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, William “Billy” Mitchell; son-in-law, Thomas Mann; sister, Carol Jean Newman; and brother-in-law, Barry Newman.
o Private family services will take place at a later date in Fort Supply, Okla.
There will be no public viewing as cremation has taken place.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or SWKS K9 Pawsibilities in care of Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS.
