ULYSSES – Gregory T. Fort, 73, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025 in Denver.

He was born June 14, 1951 to Clifford Fort Jr. and Patricia Fort.

He graduated from Ulysses High School in May 1969. He attended Fort Hays State University where he graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in history and pre-law in 1973.

He married Paulette Fort (Bieker) July 26, 1975. She preceded him in death in 2014.

He worked as a farm manager from 1974 to 1983 in Ulysses and Garden City, and spent time teaching farming practice in Al-Ghat, Saudi Arabia.

In 1983, he joined the family business, Fort Brothers Farms, and he actively farmed in the area for three decades. Upon retirement from farming, he worked in the oil and gas industry, employed by Pioneer Resources until his full retirement in 2016.

He was an active member of the Ulysses community, serving as USD 214 school board president for 16 years. Additionally, he was a big fan of the Ulysses Tigers, Kansas State University and the Kansas City Chiefs.

He was also a founding member of the Southwest Plains Regional Service Center and on the Board of Directors for Health Insurance SWPRSC.

He also loved to take adventure trips traveling all over the world, including the Indian Ocean and Macchu Picchu.

Survivors include daughter, Taryn Fort-Doyle and husband, Matt Doyle, Denver; son, Thayne Fort and wife, Jennie, Denver; siblings: Cheryl Wagner, Missouri, Jon Fort, Garden City, Brad Fort, Ulysses, Chris Fort, Phoenix, and Kelly Fort, Bloomington, Ind.; grandchildren, Ginger Doyle and Tyson Fort, Denver; and his dog, Bo.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; and son, Tyson Gabriel Fort.

• Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025 at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses, with Pastor Willy Banza presiding. 

Burial will take place this summer at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses. 

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2025 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
