ULYSSES – James Leroy “Tornado” Esser, 83, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Aug. 6, 1942 to Robert and Velma (Gagnebin) Esser.
After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1962 serving on the USS Richards Edward.
He married Elvira Flores March 24, 1984. She survives.
He worked at Morton Salt Company in Hutchinson and after moving to Ulysses, worked for Smyth Oil and Gas.
He enjoyed reading and hunting arrowheads and was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Survivors also include son, Rafael Esser and wife, Katie, Ulysses; grandson, Joseph James Esser; and many other friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers: Robert, Ron and Sam Esser.
