PASTOR’S CORNER, Pastor Phillip Dow, New Beginnings Church, Liberal
As the crisp autumn air settles across our our corner of the state, Thanksgiving invites us to pause and reflect. It’s a time for family gatherings, hearty meals, and football games, but most importantly, it’s an opportunity to cultivate gratitude. For believers, this season is not just about the blessings we enjoy, it’s about recognizing the Giver of all good gifts and embracing a heart of thankfulness rooted in faith.
The Bible repeatedly calls us to gratitude, reminding us that thanksgiving is more than a holiday tradition—it’s a lifestyle. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, the Apostle Paul exhorts us to, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” These words resonate deeply, especially during challenging seasons. Gratitude isn’t dependent on life’s circumstances but flows from our trust in God’s sovereignty.
Many of us understand the ebb and flow of seasons, both in nature and in life. Whether we’re enjoying a bountiful harvest or facing the leaner days of winter, gratitude serves as a spiritual anchor. Thanksgiving reminds us God’s provision is constant, even when it looks different than we expected. The prophet Isaiah reminds us of God’s faithfulness: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3). Trusting in God allows us to see His hand at work, even when the road feels uncertain.
Practicing gratitude can transform our hearts and our relationships. Studies increasingly show that thankfulness improves mental and emotional well-being. This shouldn’t surprise us, as Scripture repeatedly connects gratitude with peace and joy. When we choose to focus on God’s blessings rather than our burdens, we not only honor Him but also strengthen our own faith. Consider Psalm 100:4: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” Worship and thanksgiving go hand in hand, leading us into God’s presence and reminding us of His goodness.
This Thanksgiving, let’s embrace the opportunity to foster gratitude in our families and communities. Perhaps it’s through a shared meal, a heartfelt prayer, or a kind word to someone in need. Let’s not limit our thankfulness to what’s visible on the table but extend it to the unseen ways God is working in our lives. Gratitude has the power to unite us in a world often divided. It reminds us that we all rely on God’s grace and provision. In this season of thanksgiving, may we approach the table with humble hearts, ready to celebrate not just the gifts, but the One who gives them.
May your Thanksgiving be filled with joy, peace, and a renewed sense of God’s presence. As we count our blessings, let us also be a blessing to others, shining as lights in the world and pointing to the God who deserves all our thanks. Happy Thanksgiving to you!
