PASTOR’S CORNER, Bailey Norris, New Beginnings Church, Liberal
In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus calls His followers to be "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world." These metaphors illustrate the impact believers should have in a world that desperately needs the transforming power of the gospel. By examining what it means to be salt and light, we can better understand our role as disciples of Christ.
Jesus first describes His followers as "the salt of the earth" (Matthew 5:13). In ancient times, salt was a valuable commodity used for preservation and seasoning. Without refrigeration, people used salt to prevent decay in food. In the same way, Christians are called to preserve the moral and spiritual integrity of the world by living righteously and sharing the truth of God's Word.
Salt also enhances flavor. As believers, our presence in the world should bring the goodness and grace of God into every situation. Our words and actions should reflect the love of Christ, making a difference in the lives of those around us. Colossians 4:6 says, "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." This means that our speech should reflect wisdom, kindness, and truth.
However, Jesus warns that if salt loses its flavor, it becomes useless. A believer who compromises with the world, neglecting to live out their faith, loses their effectiveness. We must remain steadfast, preserving our distinctiveness as followers of Christ.
Jesus also says, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden" (Matthew 5:14). Light symbolizes truth, guidance, and holiness. Just as a lamp brightens a dark room, believers should shine with the light of Christ, revealing His love and truth to those walking in spiritual darkness.
The world is full of confusion, sin, and hopelessness, but Jesus, the "light of the world" (John 8:12), offers salvation. As His followers, we reflect His light by living according to His Word and demonstrating His character. When we let our light shine, people are drawn to God and can see the difference He makes in our lives.
Jesus emphasizes we should not hide our light. Too often, fear, complacency, or the pressures of society tempt believers to keep their faith private. However, our faith is meant to be seen and shared. "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). Our actions, attitudes, and love should point people to Christ, not ourselves.
To be salt and light requires commitment. We must remain spiritually strong through prayer, studying God's Word, and fellowship with other believers. We must also be intentional about sharing our faith through our words and actions.
As followers of Christ, we are called to make a difference in the world. By being salt, we preserve what is good and add the flavor of God’s love. By being light, we shine the hope of Christ into the darkness. In doing so, we fulfill our purpose as witnesses of the gospel, bringing glory to God and transforming lives. This week, be light, stay distinct and live a life that stands out for Jesus.
