Two fires burned parts of farm land last week in northeastern Seward County.
Fire Chief Andrew Barkley said in a press release, the first fire happened shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, when firefighters were dispatched to a field fire at Road W and Road 13.
“Units arrived on scene to find approximately three to five acres of cut agriculture product involved in fire,” he said. “Firefighters worked through the afternoon and evening extinguishing the fire.”
Barkley said the cause of the fire was mechanical failure, and damage and loss estimates were not immediately available at press time. Firefighters cleared the scene at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.
A second fire happened shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, when firefighters were dispatched to a hay fire at Road V and Road 12 in Seward County.
“Units arrived to find approximately 33 round bales involved in fire,” Barkley said in a press release. “Firefighters worked with property owners to remove unburned bales from the area. Once completed, the property owner assisted firefighters with the remaining bales that were involved with fire. Firefighters worked through the night extinguishing the fire.”
Barkley said the cause of the fire was spontaneous combustion, and as with the first fire, no damage or loss estimates were immediately available at press time. Firefighters cleared the scene at about 4 a.m. Friday.
