TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly announced Thursday more than $6.8 million in federal funds will be directed to nine new locations selected for the state’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula program.
These new direct current (DC) fast-charging stations add to Kansas’ existing electronic vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, forming a more complete statewide EV charging network.
“These investments enhance Kansas infrastructure and help meet the needs of all who travel throughout our state,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “By strengthening our network of electric vehicle charging stations, we are addressing current EV charging needs while preparing for our future demands.”
The nine new EV charging locations selected by the Kansas Department of Transportation include:
• Augusta – Casey’s, 212 W. 7th Street (U.S. Highway 400)
• Baxter Springs – Casey’s, 2403 Military Ave. (U.S. Highway 400)
• Lebo – Casey’s, 2740 Fauna Road (I-35)
• Dodge City – Love’s, 2505 E. Trail Street (U.S. Highway 400)
• Kingman – Casey’s, 442 E. D Ave. (U.S. 400)
• Ottawa – Love’s, 203 E. 27th Street (I-35)
• Park City – Sinclair, 6209 N. Broadway Ave. (I-135)
• Parsons – Casey’s, 516 Main Street (U.S. Highway 400)
Severy – Pete’s, 218 R Road (U.S. Highway 400)
Federal funding cannot exceed 80 percent for the awarded projects, which must provide a minimum 20 percent private or local cash match. This brings the total investment in Kansas to more than $9 million.
“These additional fast charging stations will give more Kansans the option to drive electric vehicles,” said Tami Alexander, KDOT Alternative Fuels Program Manager. “KDOT is leveraging private investment with the federal match to build out a statewide EV charging network.”
The new stations are in addition to six that were announced Jan. 3 and are located at:
• Emporia – Flying J, 4215 W. Hwy. 50 (I-35)
• Garden City – Love’s, 3285 E. U.S. Highway 50 (U.S. Highway 400)
• Cherokee – Pete’s, 20 U.S. Highway 400
• Fredonia – Pete’s, 2400 E. Washington Street (U.S. Highway 400)
• Belleville – Love’s, 1356 U.S. Highway 81
• Pratt – Casey’s, 1900 E. First Street (U.S. Highway 400)
NEVI formula funds require EV charging stations to be located along federally designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFC), be available every 50 miles and within one travel mile of the AFC and be capable of simultaneously charging four vehicles at 150 kW.
The charging stations must always be accessible to the public and provide other amenities such as food and beverages, restrooms and shelter from inclement weather.
When all AFCs in the state are certified as fully built out, KDOT may use NEVI funds for EV charging infrastructure on any public road or other publicly accessible locations.
