A Liberal teen is dead following an accident Thursday afternoon in rural Seward County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, a 1993 Chevy 1500 was stopped at the stop sign on County Road 17 at the junction with U.S. Highway 54 when it failed to yield and turned westbound onto Hwy. 54, pulling out in front of a 2025 Kenworth.
KHP said the semi collided with the pickup in the intersection, and both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch, partially in the lanes. The semi’s power unit and trailer came to rest on its side.
The driver of the pickup, 15-year-old Emilee Megan Grace Hamilton of Liberal, sustained fatal injuries and was taken to Hornung Funeral Home in Liberal. The Kenworth’s driver, James Campbell Bailey, 60, of Wichita, sustained no apparent injuries.
Seat belts were in use in both vehicles.
