A 25-year-old male was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after local law enforcement responded to a report of a gunshot victim in rural Seward County.
In a press release, Sheriff Gene Ward said the call came in around 3 p.m. Sunday, and along with the sheriff’s office, Seward County Rural Fire, Seward County EMS and the Liberal Police Department also responded to the report at 15143 Denoon Road.
“Law enforcement arrived on scene and took a 25-year-old male into custody without incident,” Ward said. “Law enforcement subsequently located John Robert LaPoint, 52-year-old male, in the residence at the property deceased with gunshot wounds.”
Ward said the incident was isolated, and there is no cause for alarm in the area.
“This is an ongoing investigation, and the person(s) involved have not yet been convicted of a crime and are presumed innocent,” he said. “The presumption of innocence shall continue until such time that the person(s) accused may be found guilty by a court of law.”
