Special to the Leader & Times

On April 26, officers with the Liberal Police Department conducted a proactive enforcement operation focused on preventing the sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors within the City of Liberal. The purpose of this effort was to ensure local businesses are following laws that prohibit selling age-restricted products to anyone under the legal age.

Out of 35 businesses checked during the operation, the following charges were filed:

• 18 charges for furnishing alcohol to a minor

• Five charges for furnishing tobacco to a minor

• Two charges for minor in possession of tobacco

• One charge for cocaine possession

• One charge for THC possession

• Two charges for drug paraphernalia

The Liberal Police Department remains committed to protecting the well-being of the community’s youth and ensuring businesses are held accountable when it comes to selling alcohol and tobacco. All businesses are urged to take the time to review and follow the laws that regulate the sale of these substances to minors.

The Liberal Police Department will continue working closely with local businesses and community members to prevent underage access to alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs and keep Liberal a safe and healthy place for everyone.
