A local restaurant experienced light smoke last Thursday morning, but the Pancake House in Liberal was declared safe about half hour after firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

Liberal Fire Department Battalion Chief Aaron Luman said in a press release, firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire around 5:30 a.m. Thursday at 640 E. Pancake Blvd.

“First arriving crews were met with light smoke in the building,” he said. “Upon further investigation, crews found fire in the ceiling in the kitchen.”

Luman said fire crews extinguished the fire, and the fire was declared out shortly before 6 a.m. The fire department responded with nine personnel and three apparatus.

“Firefighters opened the ceiling to remove insulation, to check for fire spread and ventilated the building,” Luman said. “Once the building was deemed safe, it was turned over to the building owner. All fire units returned to service at 7:50 a.m. The Liberal Fire Department would like to thank Black Hills Energy and the Liberal Building Department for their assistance.”

Luman said there were no injuries reported as a cause of this fire.
