L&T staff report

According to an eyewitness account and other sources, a man was struck trying to cross the railroad tracks after the guard rails came down on Kansas Avenue.

The witness to the scene was traveling south a little after 2 p.m. when the rail guard arms were activated for an oncoming train.

The witness stopped for the arms and saw a Hispanic male wearing a blue shirt, blue hat and blue jeans while carrying a beverage walking north near the track crossing.

The pedestrian looked down the track to see a train approaching from the west. The witness said the man started running in an attempt to get across the tracks before the train reached the intersection but stumbled, and he attempted to catch himself before falling. The train blew its whistle, but the eyewitness saw the train strike the pedestrian.

Traffic in Liberal came to a halt for several hours while investigators examined the scene.

The fatality accident is under investigation by the Kansas High Patrol, and no other information was available as of press time.
