Safety concerns and property damage incidents have been reported near the bridge replacement project on U.S. Highway 83B, south of Garden City.

A blocked-off area on the Arkansas River channel near the project is marked with barricades and construction fencing. This blocked-off area is a work zone for equipment storage and other work-related activities, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

People driving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have been disregarding the work zone, which could result in damage to the state and contractor’s property. KDOT urges the public to stay out of the work zone area.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies have been notified of the incidents. We urge all motorists to respect all work zones, not just for their safety but for the safety of the construction workers.
