ELKHART – In celebration of National Grasslands Week, the Cimarron National Grassland invites the public to an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 20 at the district office.

This event will be at 242 Hwy 56 East in Elkhart. Community members will have an opportunity to meet District Ranger Nancy Brewer and the staff and to learn about current projects and initiatives on the Cimarron.

The day’s festivities will continue with the “Tailgates in Three States” ceremony at 6 p.m., located eight miles west of Elkhart on County Road A for the rededication of the historic Eight Mile Corner Windmill.

This historic landmark stands where Kansas, Colorado and Oklahoma converge. The ceremony will include a special visit from Smokey Bear and complimentary hot dogs for all guests to conclude the National Grasslands Week festivities.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service Chief Randy Moore, has proclaimed June 16 through 22 as National Grasslands Week.

National Grasslands Week recognizes the creation of the National Grasslands, restored from lands ravaged during the Great Dust Bowl. These lands are now managed for wildlife habitat, forage, water, mineral resources, recreation, and other benefits for people and the environment.

The Forest Service manages 20 national grasslands in 13 states. Professional grassland managers, with the support of local communities, work on behalf of the American people to administer the nation’s grasslands using sound, progressive principles of land conservation.

Questions from the public regarding the events can be directed to the Cimarron National Grassland at 620-697-4621, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
