Kansas Department of Transportation

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, traffic changes for a passing lane project were anticipated to start Monday along U.S. Highway 54 from the Meade/Seward County line east for 1.5 miles west of Plains.

The traffic changes are needed to allow for passing lanes to be constructed.

U.S.-54 traffic will be reduced to one lane through the 1.5-mile-long project area. Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes as flaggers and a pilot car direct one-lane traffic through the work zone. The lane reduction will be marked by signs and cones. U.S.-54 will be open to normal traffic when construction is not taking place.

J&R Sand of Liberal is the contractor on this $6.5 million project. Weather permitting, it is expected to be completed by the end of November.

For more information on this project, contact Joel Valdez, Area Construction Manager, at (620) 624-4451, or Yazmin Moreno, Southwest Public Information Officer, at (620) 765-7080.
