Semi driver cited after rear-ending passenger vehicle

No injuries were reported, but one driver received two citations in a semi versus vehicle accident Tuesday morning in southeast Liberal.

The Liberal Police Department reported just before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to East Pine Street and Country Estates Road for a non-injury accident.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered a gray 2004 Acura MDX was southbound on Country Estates Road and was preparing to turn right when a white 2003 International semi struck them from behind,” the release said.

The driver of the semi was cited for inattentive driving and driving against restrictions.

Kismet man injured in accident

A Kismet man was injured in an accident late Tuesday morning in eastern Seward County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, a 2021 Ram 1500 Classic was northbound on Road P, with a 2024 Freightliner westbound on U.S. Highway 54 about seven and a half miles east of Liberal.

Lawmakers hopeful on tax relief in Kansas

The 2024 session of the Kansas Legislature is nearing its end, and with the close of session on the horizon, two area lawmakers were in Liberal April 10 for a third update on what has been happening this year in Topeka.

Kansas 115th House District Representative Gary White and 125th House District Representative Shannon Francis talked about some recent legislation addressed by state officials.

Both White and Francis said a tax plan is in the works, passing in both the House and the Senate.

“I think the governor’s going to sign it without getting too many fingerprints on it,” White said. “It’s a huge tax cut for people.”

Tyrone teens injured in Texas County accident

Two Tyrone, Okla., teens were injured in an accident Monday evening in northeast Texas County, Okla.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported around 5:20 p.m. Monday, a 2006 Chevy Cobalt was eastbound on U.S. Highway 54 just less than two miles northeast of Tyrone.

Gov. Kelly signs workers compensation reform bill

Worker’s compensation can be a tough process to wade through after an on-the-job injury and recently, the state of Kansas took action to help with just that.

Last Wednesday, Gov. Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 430, legislation that comprehensively updates Kansas’ workers compensation system.

“This legislation is a win for our workforce, our businesses, and organized labor,” Gov. Kelly noted in the State of Kansas release. “The reforms in this legislation will create a more just and efficient workers compensation system that increases the benefits for injured workers while creating administrative efficiencies and maintaining stability for businesses. The legislation increases the maximum benefits for injured workers and adds a cost-of-living adjustment to those benefits beginning in July 2027, and also provides workers compensation coverage for members of the Kansas National Guard and significantly reduces the Social Security retirement offset for certain disability benefits.”
