LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Reita Isaacs, Liberal

I usually receive the L&T the following morning because it is shared; otherwise this OPINION would have been voiced last night.

A few weeks ago I expressed a desire to be invited to a Democratic meeting. Lucky for everyone, it didn’t occur. How can there be such a discrepancy on the way “information” is interpreted when the facts are stated in black and white? Is it how we’re raised with certain core values?

How about the way a person reacts with strong emotions to situations that apply to someone else, but not you personally; giving you the moral outrage to encourage the first ones to actually commit the crimes that can/will have them thrown out of the America they so strongly desire to be welcomed to?

Yes, we do have the largest population of undocumented immigrants, which automatically disqualifies them from the constitutional rights legal immigrants have —  the rights guaranteed to enjoy without the fear of being arrested or deported.

Do these people need an emergency plan?

Let’s see how you’ve set your “illegals” up to be investigated even quicker; because the authorities will have read your comments and search more carefully. Your advice, in part, is to not carry any false identification or documents, do not give false information, do not run, and if you are approached, remain silent because you “have the right to do so.” Do not sign anything until you talk to a lawyer.

Mercy, what a long detailed list of ways to avoid being caught being illegal in a country that welcomes those genuinely seeking what we offer, and going through what will make you welcome. That includes learning English and assimilating into the culture. Sad, but true, these requirements are seldom met.

Everyone knows and appreciates the need for many employees to keep our meat-packing plants functioning, plus other industries, as well as just all-around life functions.

Congratulations Ms. Alonso and Rangel-Lopez for making “your” people frozen in fear for their lives. I’m assuming you’ve opened your own homes at some time and provided food for them while waiting for ICE to enforce the law according to American constitutional law.

Now I’m absolutely exhausted.

See you.

EDITOR’S NOTE — No one can be deported without due process, which can be considered a right. Anyone in the United States will be given due process. If it is determined through due process that a person does not have a legal right to be in the United States, at that point rights granted to the American people no longer apply. However, human rights remain in force for a humane practice of deportation.

While one administration may choose to ignore enforcing immigration law and another may be more aggressive at enforcing it, we should not allow this issue to divide our local community. Immigration enforcement is a federal function, and no local effort can avoid or accelerate the decisions made at the federal level.

Local efforts have been made to try to make the process to follow the legal process easier. Liberal welcomes newcomers. No local business asks anyone’s status and probably never will. Still, anyone who is not documented that may be in our community is putting themselves and their family at risk of deportation and separation according to current law.

Until a better system is created, all current laws apply. Anyone who feels they might end up splitting their family if arrested for violating immigration law can take the necessary action today to avoid that. Realize there is nothing local  law enforcement can do to prevent federal law from being enforced.

While many are focused on stopping the flow of illegal migrants in the country, no one is providing an alternative to make the legal process better.

We would be better served putting our efforts toward a proposal that reduces the bureaucratic nightmare that currently makes legal residency difficult.

President Donald Trump has made it an issue to cut red tape in Washington. We should be working on doing exactly that with our immigration policy.
