LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Janeth Vazquez, Liberal City Commissioner
To the racist individuals who continue writing articles about me simply because I stand up for immigrant families — enough is enough.
During our town’s 4th of July parade — a celebration meant to honor freedom and unity — a local Republican used their float to display a massive sign calling for me and Mayor Lara to resign. That wasn’t about democracy. It was public bullying. It was racist.
This isn’t the first attack, and sadly, I doubt it will be the last. For over a year now, there has been a clear pattern of harassment — people targeting me with editorials, comments, death threats, and now parade floats, all because I dare to stand with the families who make our community strong.
Let’s be honest: this is not about a disagreement on policy. This is about racism, fear, and the desire to silence voices that speak up for justice, dignity, and human rights.
As a City Commissioner, my job is to serve all residents — regardless of immigration status, background, or origin. That includes helping families understand their rights under the law. Sharing information and encouraging safety is not breaking the law — it is honoring it. And standing up for immigrant families doesn’t make me unfit to serve. It makes me the exact kind of leader our community deserves.
Liberal is made stronger by its diversity. Our immigrant families are not outsiders — they are our neighbors, our workers, our students, our parents. They are this town.
I will not be intimidated.
I will not be silenced.
And I will not stop advocating for the people who make this community thrive.
To those trying to push me out: I won’t back down. I will keep fighting for every family in Liberal — immigrant families, hard-working families — because this town belongs to all of us.
Enough is enough!
