LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Rachel Strickland, Liberal
Regarding an article in the Sept. 23 Leader & Times headed, “Commissioners differ on how to fund services while also respecting taxpayers.”
I understand that Seward County has gotten itself into a bind again with this coming tax judgement. Our county lurches from one crisis to another, and every time what do you do? You go back to the tax payer to save you from bad decisions. We are people, not milk cows. Act accordingly.
Regarding comments made by Commissioner (Presephoni) Fuller quoted in this article, and I quote, “If the undocumented families living in Liberal leave, the community would become a ghost town.”
I would like everyone to pause and ponder that comment from a Seward County commissioner. “If the undocumented families living in Liberal leave, the community would become a ghost town.”
In the next paragraph Commissioner Fuller said, and I quote, “That’s private information that is not supposed to be disclosed.”
Also in the same paragraph we are treated to this: “We don’t want people to think we don’t want to take care of them.”
The audacity of these comments are breathtaking.
Madam Commissioner, let me inform you Liberal, Kan., was not a ghost town before the flood of illegals into this area, and once they’re rounded up and escorted back to their country of origin, Liberal will still be here, loud and proud as ever.
In fact, I believe we will thrive.
There will be many jobs opened up for local residents, housing will improve, rents will go down and American citizens who are born and raised in this area will be able to stay here and raise their own families. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
Commissioner Fuller, your comment about that information being private and not to be disclosed is absurd. People in this area are perfectly aware of what’s going on. My Lord, we have eyes, ears and discernment. We’ve known for years that we are awash in our illegals who show up with nothing but the clothes on their backs, their children and their medical conditions. We also know their second order of business is to enroll in every charity and social program that was developed for American citizens who need temporary aid.
You also are quoted as saying, “We don’t want people to think we don’t want to take care of them.” That’s an absurd statement. Of course we don’t want to “take care” of people. They can take care of themselves. We provide roads, bridges, good water, sanitary services, housing opportunities and the rest is up to them. Seward County taxpayers are not Grandfather Goodies, Santa Claus or the Bank of America.
You rail at us to be respectful. What nerve. Respect is earned, not demanded. There is no respecting someone who sneaks into my country illegally, sets up residence illegally and thumbs their nose at my country, my culture and our laws.
