A slow first half against Topeka Washburn Rural led to a season-ending loss for the Liberal Redskin soccer team Monday.

Liberal advanced to the quarterfinals of Class 6A with playoff wins over Haysville Campus (7-0) and Wichita Northwest (2-0).

After shutting out the first two playoff opponents, the Redskins gave up  a goal in the first five-and-a-half minutes to Rural to fall behind 1-0.

Midway through the first half Rural added a second goal and was able to keep the 2-0 lead after the first half.

Neither team scored in the first 20 minutes of the second half, and Rural pushed the lead to 3-0 with 15 minutes to play.

The Redskins broke through two minutes later with a penalty kick goal from Suain Moncayo to cut the lead to 3-1, but Rural responded 10 minutes later with a  goal to take a 4-1 lead.

Josh Garcia added a goal in the final 30 seconds, but it wasn’t enough in a 4-2 loss.
