ARKANSAS CITY — The Seward County Community College Lady Saints led Cowley College from start to finish en route to a 71-64 road win on Saturday afternoon.
The win got Seward back on track following a loss at Cloud County Wednesday. A poor shooting night doomed Seward in the loss against the Thunderbirds and Seward started off slow again, leading only 4-3 with under five minutes left the first quarter. But the shooting woes did not continue and the Lady Saints went on to a 16-9 edge after one quarter and held a 32-29 margin at the half.
Seward continued to push forward the rest of the game, holding a 52-47 lead after three quarters and then by the final margin of seven points, 71-64.
The sophomores were a key for the Lady Saints with Kylee Hunt, Allie Myers, Ari Gordon and Biyyanah Ellis leading the way. Hunt had a game-high 18 points and Myers posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Gordon posted 11 points and Ellis scored nine. Avery Marchino also chipped in with 10 points for Seward.
Jamie Molina had 15 points and Jaiden Smith and Elysa Martinez each netted 12 points for Cowley, which suffered its first defeat of the season, going 1-1 in conference play and 6-1 overall.
The Lady Saints posted their first conference win, improving to 1-1 in the Jayhawk Conference, and 5-2 overall. Seward returns home to host Butler at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Greenhouse.
