The Lady Redskins continued to dominate on the mat Thursday in a dual against Ulysses while the Redskins fell short against the Tigers.

The Lady Redskins swept the lower weight classes beginning with Kiersie Carlile and continued to build on their early season momentum with a 72-12 win.

The Lady Redskins already have two tournament championships and have continued to dominate opponents. Thursdays performance against Ulysses was another step forward in the program.

For the Redskins, it was another rough night. Liberal continued to wrestle without its full roster due to injury and illness, and the Redskins fell short 47-27.

I was really impressed with the improvement on the boys team,” Liberal coach Mike Fowler said. “I know the score wasn’t in our favor, but we did make it somewhat competitive. As long as we keep working hard — we’ve got a few issues in the practice room we need to clean up. You perform like you practice. That was our message to them.”

But that was not the case with the Lady Redskins.

“The girls are clicking right now,” Fowler said. “It’s great to watch them. The girls have confidence right now, and it shows. They dominate, they are team oriented. That’s the difference in the boys team and the girls team right now. Mostly it’s the work ethic and the team camaraderie.”

Fowler is trying to use the success of the girls team to motivate the boys.

“The girls set a great example,” he said. “We use them as an example. Work hard, listen to your coaches, continuous movement during practice. Some of our young wrestlers are going to be great on the boys side, we just have to get them some more mat time, and to have them figure out the system.”

The Redskins were missing some wrestlers due to illness, and others were nursing injuries.

“We will have a few days here to get healed up,” Fowler said.

Liberal will travel to Hoisington over the weekend and then face Dodge City after break.
