The Liberal Redskins went 2-1 at the Guthrie 89er Tournament that ended Saturday.

After knocking off the host team Thursday, Liberal advanced to the semi-finals against the Harrah Panthers and came away with a dominating 13-1 win.

But Liberal didn’t walk away with the win early. The Redskins scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth, and Marco Alonso tossed a shutout bottom half of the sixth to secure the win.

Aidan Schwindt led the Redskins at the plate with three hits and an RBI.

Zayden Martinez had a  home run and four RBIs, and Aidan Mata had two hits and three RBIs.

Alonso helped his cause with two hits and an RBI.

Liberal led 1-0 after the first inning and 2-0 after the third.

Liberal had a 3-1 lead after the fifth before pushing 10 runs across the plate in the sixth.

Alonso pitched all six innings allowing one run on one hit and three walks while striking out seven.

The win sent Liberal to the championship game Saturday, but they came up short against Piedmont 6-4.

Liberal took a 3-0 lead in the second, but the Wildcats scored four in the third to take a 4-3 lead.

The Redskins tied the game in the top of the sixth, but Piedmont pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-4 lead.

The Redskins couldn’t score in the top of the seventh.

Aiden Miramontes had a hit and two RBIs for the Redskins in the loss. Brooks Kappelmann and Schwindt each had two hits.

Martinez pitched five innings and allowed four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four.

Skylar Hubbard pitched on inning and allowed two runs on one hit and three walks.
