Southwest Medical Center (SWMC) has been selected as one of only 10 hospitals in Kansas to participate in the Kansas Anchor Hospital Advancement Program (AHAP), a statewide initiative designed to strengthen rural healthcare by expanding access to specialty services, advancing technology, and improving patient care.

The Anchor Hospital Advancement Program is part of the Kansas Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), a five-year initiative funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to improve healthcare access and outcomes across rural Kansas.

Southwest Medical Center was chosen based on criteria established by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, including its ability to serve surrounding communities within a 60-minute drive, provide specialized services and support regional healthcare needs.

During the program’s first year, participating Anchor Hospitals will focus on four key priorities:

Serving as a consultative resource for rural hospitals throughout their region.

Enhancing artificial intelligence and electronic health record technology to improve patient care and care coordination.

Developing rural residency programs to strengthen the healthcare workforce.

Expanding remote patient monitoring services to help patients receive care while remaining in their communities.

These initiatives position Anchor Hospitals as regional leaders in clinical excellence, workforce development, and healthcare innovation.

As part of the program, Southwest Medical Center will have representation on the independent AHAP Board of Directors, which will help guide future priorities and funding opportunities through the Rural Health Transformation Program.

Kansas received $221.8 million from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to support the first year of the Rural Health Transformation Program. The investment is expected to strengthen rural healthcare systems across the state by expanding access to care, supporting hospitals, and improving health outcomes for Kansans.
