PLAINVIEW, Texas – The Seward County Community College women’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Wayland Baptist University Tuesday at J.V. Hilliard Field.
Seward (1-1-0) trailed 3-0 at halftime before freshman Marcela De Sousa sparked a second-half comeback attempt with a pair of goals, pulling the Saints within one. Seward generated several scoring opportunities in the closing minutes but could not find the equalizer.
De Sousa scored the first two goals of her collegiate career in a five-minute span, finding the net in the 58th and 63rd minutes. Caroline Benck and Julia Astrath recorded assists on the scores.
Goalkeeper Christie Kannengiesser played the final 60 minutes and kept Wayland Baptist off the scoreboard, making several key saves to help fuel the Saints’ rally.
“The first half we were a bit lost and they took advantage,” head coach Marcela Bueno said. “In the second half, we changed the formation a bit and showed good fight until the last second. We had a lot of good chances down the stretch that we did not capitalize on.”
The Saints return to action Wednesday at Trinidad State for a 6 p.m. CST kickoff.
