Steven M. Porter, 77, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2024 at his home in Ulysses.
He was born April 8, 1947 to Milton and Maxine (Swan) Porter.
He married Jane Majernik Sept. 4, 1970. She preceded him in death.
He graduated from Sublette High School. He furthered his education at Dodge City Community College and Fort Hays State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business.
He worked for Cities Service, Oxy, Golden Rule in Johnson, and the Kansas Department of Transportation in Ulysses.
He loved to golf, play cards and games. He was an avid cat lover and spent a lot of time with his beloved pets.
Some of his hobbies included watching sports, especially KU Basketball and Royals Baseball, watching old western movies, playing bingo, fishing, hunting pheasants, and shooting pool.
He was very proud of his family and grandkids and treasured the time he spent with them and attending their games and activities.
He was a member of Shelton Memorial Christian Church.
Survivors include daughters, Julie Hickman, Wichita, and Stephanie Shivers and husband, Tyler, Winfield; brother, Gary Porter and wife, Janie, Hugoton; brother-in-law, John Majernik and wife, Kathi, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three grandchildren: Joshua Hickman, Jackson Shivers, and Jaylin Shivers.
He was also preceded in death by his father; mother and stepfather, Maxine and Jim Dewey; son-in-law, Jason Hickman; and sister, Nancy Porter Claggett.
• Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2024 at Shelton Memorial Christian Church with Reverend Casey Chapman presiding.
Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
