Jesús Monarrez Peña, 91, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024 at his home in Liberal.

He was born Oct. 15, 1933 to Mariano Monarrez Diaz and Aurelia Peña Barron in El Oro, Durango, Mexico. 

He married Gregoria Sánchez de Monarrez Aug. 15, 1954. She survives.

As a self-employed farmer, he dedicated his life to caring for the land and supporting his family.

He enjoyed horse racing and the joy and excitement they brought. His favorite pastime was opening the doors of his pool hall, “El Recreo del Campesino,” for his friends and residents of La Puerta de Cabrera.

He delighted in creating special memories with his children and grandchildren, sharing stories and laughter.

Survivors include his wife, Gregoria Sanchez de Monarrez, Liberal; four sons: Adan Monarrez and wife, Maria, Liberal, Martin Monarrez and wife, Socorro, Liberal, Jesus Monarrez and wife, Obdulia, Liberal, and Victor Monarrez and wife, Azucena, Liberal; six daughters: Eva Serrano and husband, Rafael, Chicago, María Concepcion Posada and husband, Abraham, Durango, Mexico, María del Carmen Franco and husband, Celso, Liberal, María Gregoria Mendoza and husband, Francisco, Liberal, Yesenia Monarrez, Durango, Mexico, and Ludivia Monarrez, Liberal; 29 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Juanita Monarrez; and brothers, Concepcion Monarrez, and Margarito Monarrez.

• Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024 at Hornung Family Funeral Home at 1212 W. 2nd Street in Liberal.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church at 1510 N. Calhoun Avenue in Liberal.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, with Reverend Charles Seiwert presiding.

Burial will follow at the Liberal City Cemetery.
