HUGOTON – Gierhard “George” Unger, 65, died Thursday, March 27, 2025 at his home in Elkhart.

He was born Jan. 11, 1960 to Jacob and Helena (Heinrichs) Unger.

He married Katharina Knelsen July 18, 1983. She survives.

He was baptized in June 1982 by Gierhard Neufeld. He was a member of New Reinlander Mennonite Church in Hugoton.

He enjoyed going to the lake, fishing, playing games with family, and most of all, playing and joking with his 14 grandchildren.

Survivors also include son, Johnny Unger and his wife, Lana, and their five children: Hannah, Amariah, Leah, Weston, and Lydiah; three daughters: Helena Loewen and husband, Juan, and their children: Jaelynn Rae and Kayden Jorge; Annie Reimer and husband, Peter, and their five children: Sylas, Aralynn, Sawyer, Solomon, and Auctavia; and Truide Unger and her children: Jayven and Layla; five brothers; and six sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin daughters, Anna and Tina Unger; granddaughter, Jayla Smith; one sister; and three brothers.

• Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at New Reinlander Mennonite Church at 1020 E. 11th Street in Hugoton. 

Burial will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at Garnand Funeral Home at 920 E. 11th Street in Hugoton.
