Steven Lee Brooks, lifelong Kansan, car show regular, animal lover, and master of sarcasm, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025, in Liberal, the town he proudly called home for most of his life. He had just celebrated his 78th birthday April 14, a milestone he would’ve joked was “longer than I ever thought I’d live.”
Born in Salina in 1947, Steve built a life centered around family, old ugly cars, and helping others. For 50 years, he practiced law, not for the spotlight, but because he had a gift for showing up when people needed help. Friends, family, and neighbors knew they could count on him, whether it was legal advice or just someone in their corner.
Steve was a man who lived life entirely on his own terms. He was kind to others, deeply devoted to his family, but unapologetically himself. If you asked him how he was doing, his trademark response was always, “Off welfare and out of jail.” And if you were lucky enough to share a moment with him, you probably heard him say, “Beer me.”
Some of his best days were spent at car shows, surrounded by hot rods, laughter, and longtime friends. He and his buddies proudly called their group “The Horses’ Asses,” a name that raised eyebrows and drew plenty of laughs. They wore it like a badge of honor, a symbol of the fun, and friendship they shared.
Steve continued to share his love for classic cars with his kids even after they were grown. Brian regularly met him in Blackwell, Okla. for a show and throw some money away at the casinos. Erica would meet him in Goodland, where they had a great time. These weren’t just car shows, they were treasured chapters in their family story.
He is survived by his wife Mary; his brothers, Jake and Wayne Brooks and their wives, Jerry and Sandy Brooks; his daughter, Erica; his son, Brian and his wife Melissa, and his two grandsons, Jackson (11) and Ryder (6), who brought him endless pride and joy. Steve lit up when he talked about his kids and grandkids. He was proud of the people they’ve become and never hesitated to let others know it.
• Steve also had a big heart for animals. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in his honor to Angels for Animals or the Liberal Animal Shelter.
Per his wishes, there will be no formal funeral. That’s just not his thing. Instead, the family will host a celebration of his life this summer at two of his favorite spots in town sharing stories, drinking beer, and honoring the man who taught them how to live boldly, love fiercely, and always be unapologetically yourself.
