Carl Albert Sappelsa, 98, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025 at Brookdale Liberal Springs.

He was born Aug. 30, 1927 to Joseph and Augusta Marie (Krack) Sappelsa. 

He married Evelyn Marie Spinner Oct. 1, 1950. She preceded him in death Jan. 1, 2006. 

He started his career as a warehouse supervisor for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company in Long Island, New York, until 1974. In Liberal, he worked as a director of quality control at National Beef from 1975 until his retirement in 1991. 

He served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he was member of the Naval Reserve for many years.

He was member of Fellowship Baptist Church, the Liberal Senior Center, The American Legion, and the Ceramic and Painting Club.

He enjoyed going to the SCCC Saints Basketball games and the Liberal Bee Jay baseball games.

He had a passion for gardening, spending time with dear friends, and oil painting.

Survivors include son, Warren Sappelsa, California; brother, August Sappelsa, New York; sister-in-law, Gloria Sappelsa; grandchildren: Noah, Levi and Asher; and dear friends: Gail Phelps and Tera and Lance Robinson.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris McBride and her husband, Jerry; brother, Joseph Sappelsa; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Sappelsa.

• Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025 at the Hornung Family Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal, with Pastor David Harris presiding.

A private burial will take place.

Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025 at Hornung Family Funeral Home at 1212 W 2nd Street in Liberal.

Memorials are suggested to the Liberal Senior Center or the Fellowship Baptist School, in care of Hornung Family Funeral Home 1212 W. 2nd Street, Liberal, KS 67901.
