PASTOR’S CORNER, Rev. Rex Petty, Faith Tabernacle Church, Liberal

One day a staunch Republican was asked whether he would vote for God if he ran on the Democratic ticket. He replied he would not ever have to worry about that because God would never run as a Democrat. Abraham Lincoln once said that we should never claim that God is on our side, instead we must ask ourselves whether we are on God's side.

Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024 is an important election! All 435 U.S. House of Representatives seats are open for election along with one-third of the U.S. Senate. There are also many races on the state and local levels to be decided, yet the most coveted office is for the Presidency of the United States. Our nation needs to elect candidates who will successfully lead us. Jesus encourages us to follow Him as he said, "I am the way, the truth and the life" (John 14:6). If America's problems are to be healed, it will take a change of heart amongst her citizens, one at a time. The British statesman Edmund Burke once said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing."

When spiritual awakenings have occurred in America, history records how churches filled up with people, the bars closed down and crime decreasing, along with a decrease in lying, cheating, stealing, and hating. Families stayed together by praying together along with a deep love, joy, peace, and compassion for one another, including their neighbors. Every aspect of life in a community, and a nation improves dramatically when people vote in their hearts to pledge their allegiance to the Lord. Our nation needs to return to the inscription on all our money, "In God We Trust" because blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord . . .Psalms 33:12

Many of our former presidents recognized this such as Herbert Hoover, who once said

"Some of these old values are slipping away rapidly from American life and if they slip too far, the lights will go out in America, even if we win the hot and cold wars." Our 34th President Dwight Eisenhower, a man of faith raised in Abilene, realized this and while in office he added the words "One Nation Under God" to our Pledge of Allegiance. He said every day, when all of the students in school start each day to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, they would learn and be reminded that we were one nation under God which is our history we were founded upon. Our 40th president, Ronald Reagan, said, "If we forget we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under." President Lincoln recognized our country desperately needed help during the Civil War and he called for prayer, fasting and repentance. He said "We have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has grown, but we have forgotten God." The last act of Congress signed by President Lincoln before his assassination in 1865 was a bill requiring the motto, "In God We Trust" to be inscribed upon all our coins! In 1956, a bill was signed into law officially making "In God We Trust" our nation's motto!

The Scripture that summarizes the need for the United States to turn to God and the importance of electing godly men and women that follow Biblical principles is found in

II Chronicles 7:14, "If my people, which are called by my Name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
