PASTOR’S CORNER, Eydie Petty, Faith Tabernacle Church, Liberal

As I thought about this week's Pastors Corner, which I was asked to do for the month of October, I decided I would submit my article written by my wife Eydie. The greatest asset to a Pastor is the blessing of his wife who gives terrific ideas with wise counsel so I am submitting this excellent article written by my wife, Eydie Petty!

Picture this. The wind has just started to howl outside, snowflakes have begun to swirl painting pictures on the sidewalks and the temperature has just dipped below freezing. As you observe this scenery from your frosted windowpane, a shiver goes up your back just thinking of being out there fighting the weather. You then settle yourself into your warm easy chair and plop your toasty stocking feet on your foot stool and take a sip of your marshmallowy hot cocoa. Sound pretty comfortable? You betcha.

Is it possible, maybe even probable, that some of us have settled into our church pews or chairs with that same feeling of warmth and comfort? I know I find myself doing it.

Our churches are to be a place of refuge and strength. A haven to recharge for the week ahead. But what happens when we don't want to step out of this comfort zone during the week, when we are content to keep our faith within our church walls?

The great commission Jesus gave to His disciples applies to us today as well. "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I command you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28: 19-20)

Dare to step out of your comfort zone this week. Invite an unchurched friend to church, volunteer to help in the nursery, take Jesus out of the church building into your work environment.

Let's all get uncomfortable so God's loving grace and tender mercies can reach the people we are to touch.
