Liberal police are investigating a local money making phone scam involving a Seward County Sheriff’s deputy.

A release from the Liberal Police Department said the scam currently targets community members.

“Several individuals have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be Deputy Fenn with the Seward County Sheriff’s Department,” the release said. “This includes ‘spoofing’ the telephone number that appears to come from the sheriff’s department or local law enforcement.”

The release said the caller tells the victim they have missed a court day, and LPD emphasized this is a scam.

“The goal of the caller is to illicitly obtain money from unsuspecting victims by pressuring them pay a fraudulent bond fee over the phone,” the release said.

The public is also reminded law enforcement will never call individuals to collect bond money or demand payment over the phone.

“If you receive such a call, do not provide any personal or financial information, and hang up immediately,” the release said. “If you believe you have been targeted or have fallen victim to this scam, please call the Liberal Police Department at 620-626-0141. We encourage everyone to share this information with friends and family, particularly elderly or vulnerable individuals who are targeted by such scams.”
