The Liberal Police Department is warning the public of the dangers of mini bikes and pocket bikes.
A release from the LPD said the bikes are becoming more common among youth in the community, and while they seem like harmless fun, it is important for parents and riders to know these bikes are not street legal and are not allowed to be operated anywhere on public property.
“Kansas law requires any motor-driven cycle operated on a public roadway be equipped with headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, a horn and working brakes – just like any other motor vehicle,” the LPD release said. “Mini bikes do not meet these legal requirements and therefore cannot be used on city streets, sidewalks, alleys or public trails. They are not exempt due to size or age of the rider.”
The release went on to say any motor-driven cycle with more than five brake horsepower must also be registered, insured and operated by someone with a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement.
“These laws are in place for public safety, and they will be enforced,” the release said.
The release added there have be several recent close calls involving children on mini bikes who are speeding, running stop signs and pulling into traffic.
“These actions create dangerous situations for both the riders and drivers, and the consequences could be tragic,” the release said. “We are urging parents to take this seriously and not allow their children to operate mini bikes in areas where they are not permitted. These bikes are not toys – they are motor vehicles under Kansas law.”
