The Seward County Employee Committee awarded two scholarships of $400 each to local students at Monday’s county commission meeting.

The first scholarship went to Mya Fabbro, daughter of Angela Davis, who works as a nurse in the Seward County Jail. Fabbro comes from a large health care family, and she is pursuing the same field – radiologic technology.

Administrator April Warden read a statement from Seward County Community College, where Fabbro currently attends.

“She has excelled in the rigorous biology, anatomy and physiology courses and achieved exemplary grades in her coursework,” the statement said. “Her keen aptitude, diligent work ethic and maturity allowed her to excel at both the laboratory and lecture format components of each of her courses.”

The statement continued by saying Fabbro is a mature, responsible individual fully capable of being successful.

“She is one of the brightest, conscientious students I have ever had the pleasure to instruct,” the statement concluded.

Monday’s second scholarship winner was Natalie Olvera, daughter of Stasia Wagenseller. Olvera has chosen a career in the study of diesel mechanics.

“She loves to work on cars and trucks and really anything she can,” Warden said. “After completing her associate’s degree, she plans to  work in a shop until she can become financially stable to one day own her own shop and employ people.”

Warden read a statement from Liberal High School concerning Olvera.

“She is not only intelligent but also possesses a rare combination of qualities that make her stand out amongst her peers,” the statement said. “Natalie has a deep understanding of the material and commitment to excellence. She consistently goes above and beyond what is expected. She excels in the area of determination and teamwork.”
