TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Transportation and the Drive To Zero Coalition completed the first year of the five-year Safety Corridor Pilot Program.

The program aims to decrease fatalities and serious injuries on four highway corridors by implementing proven safety countermeasures, such as increasing the presence of state and local law enforcement.

The Liberal City Commission found itself revisiting discussion of community improvement during a special meeting Tuesday afternoon.

The main topic of the meeting was the use Community Improvement District (CID) and how they should be approached. A proposal for the use of a CID for a Dairy Queen project had come before the commission at its Aug. 13 meeting from Damien Denmark.

The fall and winter seasons will be approaching soon, which means more people will be at risk for respiratory illnesses and viruses.

To help with just that, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) launched a new national campaign last week to help inform the public about common respiratory viruses and available vaccines. The campaign, Risk Less. Do More., aims to increase awareness of vaccines that reduce serious illness from influenza (flu), COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in high-risk populations and to limit the spread of these viruses among all Americans, according to an HHS release.

Liberal’s Grace Place Pregnancy Care Center has two major fundraisers during the year, and the biggest one is coming up in less than a month.

Officials with the local pregnancy care center are preparing for the 2024 Grace Place fundraising banquet, and Director Letty Hernandez said the event helps collect funds by requesting donations to help the agency continue to provide needed services.

“It helps us keep our doors open,” she said.
