The days are getting shorter, but even in the shortest of days, there is still plenty of daylight. With that in mind, as well as other factors, the risk of skin cancer is a constant threat, and skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S.

However, when found early and treated, survival rates from the disease have become higher in recent years, and a booth at this year’s Community Health Fair in Liberal can help with that.

The Kansas Highway Patrol worked two accidents in the past week in Meade County, one of which claimed the life of a New Mexico man.

The fatality occurred around 10:30 p.m. last Wednesday on U.S. Highway 54 at N Road or about one mile east of Meade.

KHP said at that time, a 2016 Kia Forte was westbound on Hwy. 54 when it crossed the center line and the eastbound lanes, traveling through the median.

This summer, the Western Kansas Community Foundation conducted its survey initiative, “Our Community, Our Future,” conducted in Liberal, Hugoton, Lakin and Cimarron.

This month, the foundation is launching forums for the survey, which was closed in July, and WKCF Community Development Coordinator Bailey Sater said the survey was initiated to assist the foundation in gaining a deeper understanding of local priorities, goals and challenges. She added the initiative signals a new strategy for WKCF in its efforts to serve Southwest Kansas.

The USD 480 school board had a full yet easy agenda at its most recent meeting Monday evening.

After a public hearing for exceeding the Revenue Neutral Rate (during which no one from the community spoke), the board then moved on to its regular meeting.

After administrator reports from Superintendent Stephen Linkous, Director of Operations Chad Mease and Director of Business Services Nila Newton, the board then moved on to the agenda’s new business, beginning with discussion of an audiology contract with Southwest Kansas Area Cooperative (SKACD).
