Summertime is in full swing, and there is no greater reminder of that than temperatures flirting with reaching triple digits on the mercury in many areas.
This leaves many people trying to find a way to stay cool, and while swimming holes help somewhat in that regard, they do not help when trying to keep cool at home.
The Liberal City Commission will be looking at another light agenda for its next meeting this evening starting at 5:30. Tonight’s meeting will be in the commission chambers in the Liberal Recreation Center at 950 S. Grant Ave.
The first of the two items of new business for the commission will be discussion of Ordinance 4618 concerning modifying the hours of cereal malt beverage sales on Sundays.
Claire Thompson graduated in 2012 from Michigan State University, and after some time teaching music at two USD 480 elementary schools, she will now be teaching at another school known for the color green.
Thompson was recently hired as the instrumental music instructor at Seward County Community College. She came to Liberal in 2012 after a friend put her in touch with a local principal.
“I interviewed and accepted the position and moved out here a week later and started right away,” she said.
The USD 480 school board will look to have an easy evening for its next meeting Monday evening starting at 6:30. Monday’s meeting will be in Room B110 at Seymour Rogers Middle School at 721 Griffith Ave.
Up first on the agenda will be discussion of Resolution M concerning the adoption of the district's organizational chart for the 2024-2025 school year, which staff is recommending the board approve.
The Seward County Community College Board of Trustees prepped for the upcoming academic year at the regular monthly meeting — and they started by attending class in the form of a board workshop provided by the Kansas Association of School Boards. The 90-minute workshop covered all the basics of how elected boards function in the state of Kansas, including a review of recent legislative updates affecting higher education.
Longtime trustee, SCCC Board Chair Ron Oliver, thanked facilitator Dr. Steve Karlin of the Kansas Association of School Boards, noting how it’s great training for experienced board members as well as newly elected trustee Kelly Hill.
