LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Reita Isaacs, Liberal

What you wanna bet this little gadget in my hand has already guessed what I’m going to be discussing: Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI for short. Mercy me. Yup, losing my train of thought even before getting started.

My life started a long, long time ago when I can remember helping chip the ice from the old ice box in our kitchen; then when I came home one afternoon, there was an electric refrigerator in it’s place that not only had a light when you opened the door, it had four medal ice cube trays with handles to break them apart. Guess how many times we opened that before “divine intervention” powered by Dad’s hand stopped us.

About that same time we had an upright radio that could supply either the news or music.

Dead silence from the family during lunchtime/news was required. I still remember asking Mom how all those little people can get in there.

Close by was the wooden telephone with the crank hand.  Mom was at the neighbor’s, and I couldn’t find her, so I dialed up the operator and told her, “I can’t find my mommy. I think she’s next door.”

That precious operator knew every kid’s voice in Liberal. Our number was 234, and I was forced to start using 6234. Then the black phone, progressing up to the monster in my hand. I still have a land line that works when the weather is good.

Each new invention to make our lives easier or to allow for more pleasure has led us willingly, down the “garden path.” Absolutely, through the years we’ve enjoyed everything presented to us, never in our wildest conception of how it was always designed to infiltrate and control us and the world.

The little cell phone that emits radiation is given to infants and children to entertain them or keep them quiet while a parent does something else. No need to list anything in particular because all of them are designed to program their little minds; same from babyhood through adulthood.

Addiction to cell phones, computers, and laptops used by teenagers — the contents, images, subtle suggestions, porn, bullying — and the new addition of AI that allows the destruction of the individual, often leading to suicide.

It’s past time for parents to be parents.

Dad, be a man. Protect your daughter and teach your son to be what a man should be.

Mom, take the phones, tablets and television away. Speak to children in normal speech, play with them, read to them, let them socialize with others their size.

I’ve been a mother and grandmother for many years, and I know it sounds impossible, but it’s not, and the rewards are unbelievable.

Well, rats. This is too long and not the subject I planned to cover. Finger is poised, and I’m going to expose AI, ready or not. You’ve all been asleep for hours, so I’ll just stop for today.

See you.
