LETTER TO THE EDITOR, Susan Lukwago, Liberal

This letter is in response to the front page above the fold article in (Tuesday’s) newspaper. The article is entitled “Commissioners sign documents without approval.”

What was the procedure in place that governed the receipt, acceptance and approval of the grant applications mentioned? Having a copy of the procedures for these actions would help make the research that was and is being conducted more complete.

At the last County Commission meeting, on Monday Nov. 3, the Administrator of Seward County Health Department presented procedures that make clear the process of application, receipt, acceptance and approval of grants from KDHE or other entities. The Commissioners had received copies of these procedures in their packet in preparation for the meeting. One Commissioner said he had not read the procedures that Brie Greeson, the Administrator of SCHD had prepared for approval by the Commission. Amazingly, the matter was tabled.

So again, what was the procedure in place that governed the receipt, acceptance and approval of the grant applications mentioned in the article today? While we learn much from the past — and indeed history is a wonderful teacher — we usually cannot undo the past. We live in the present and seek and hope to do better in the future. It is my hope that the Commissioners will have all had a chance to review the grant application process procedures that the Administrator of SCHD prepared and will approve them at the next meeting on Monday Nov. 17. When any part of Seward County does well, we all do well. Focusing on bringing down parts of Seward County brings us all down.
