Liberal continued to lead the state with the fewest goals allowed after shutting out the Garden City Buffaloes in a 2-0 win Tuesday at Redskin Field.
The shutout was the sixth of the season for the Redskins.
Suain Moncayo also became part of Redskin soccer history by tying Eduardo Moreno as the all-time leading scorer with 58 goals. And it would take solid defense to pull out the win, because the Buffaloes also limited the number of shots Liberal had at the Garden City goal.
Moncayo tied the record with 25 minutes to play in the first half after a hand ball was called against the Buffaloes in the box. Moncayo put the penalty kick high and to the left into the net for a 1-0 lead.
But the Redskins couldn’t add to the lead, and Garden City had a chance to tie after the Redskins were called for a foul inside their own box.
But Liberal goalkeeper Gael Ruvalcaba was able to defend the shot with a dive to his right and protect the Liberal lead.
Neither team scored before half, and midway through the second half, Giezi Gonzalez battled high in the box against the Garden City goalkeeper, and Gonzalez attempted to get by the keeper who tackled him and was called for a foul.
Gonzalez capitalized with a penalty kick high to the right in the net for a 2-0 Liberal lead.
The Redskin defense faced a barrage of attacks the rest of the way, but they did not allow a clean shot and came away with the 2-0 win, delivering another shutout.
“Its hard work,” Liberal coach Carlos Ruiz said. “Our whole back line is new. They have stepped up.”
