McCook, NEB. – The Seward County Community College women’s basketball team rallied from a big deficit only to fall short against McCook Community College in a 57-55 road loss on Monday.
The non-conference loss was the team’s first of the season, falling to 3-1.
The Lady Saints trailed most of the game and were down 31-21 at the half. Things did not get better as Seward got off to a horrendous third-quarter start, outscored 10-1 to see its deficit balloon to 19 points, 41-22 at the 5:48 mark.
Seward began to show a little life and clawed back, erasing its deficit to nine points, 47-38, at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Saints opened the final stanza with an 8-0 run, powered by three-pointers from Biyyanah Ellis and Kylee Hunt, to cut the margin to one, 47-46 with 7:24 remaining. Kezia Grant-Bobb nailed two free throws with under three minutes remaining to give Seward a 54-53 lead, its first since the early first quarter.
The Indians came back and took the lead. The Lady Saints had a final shot to win it, but a three-pointer at the buzzer hit the rim and was no good.
While no Seward player scored double digits, the Lady Saints did have a semblance of balance scoring with nine different scorers. Kylee Hunt and Sanaa Dennis each had nine points and four other players chipped in with six points each for Seward.
McCook improved to 3-1.
Seward returns home to host Northeastern Junior College on Monday, November 18 at 6 p.m. in the Greenhouse.
