All the things that went right for the No.4 Turpin Cardinals this season – sacks, blocked punts, and big plays – went wrong in a 66-18 loss to the No.3 Dewar Dragons Friday.
A fumbled shotgun snap on the first play from scrimmage followed up by a sack and a blocked punt shook a Turpin team that had steamrolled through most of their schedule. It took Dewar one offensive play to take a 6-0 lead less than a minute and a half into the game.
The Dragon onslaught continued as Dewar took a 28-0 lead less than 30 seconds into the second quarter. Turpin was finally able to answer with a 10-play, 65-yard touchdown drive. Turpin converted fourth down and a third and 12 when Carson Peters escaped a sure sack and found Jhett Huffman for a first down at the Dewar 21. Three plays later Peters scored with 7:59 left in the half to make the score 28-6. Dewar led 36-6 at the half.
Dewar scored on the first play of the second half, but Peters answered with a 66-yard TD run, making the score 44-12 with 10:52 left in the third. Turpin was able to mount one more drive, going 65 yards on 13 plays capped by an 11-yard Peters to Huffman TD with 5:38 in the third (52-18). Dewar ended the game by mercy rule as the final seconds of the third quarter ticked off the clock.
The Cardinals finish their season 9-2.
