The No. 5 Lady Redskins opened the season with an impressive 24-6 win over Hugoton Tuesday in The Big House while the Redskins came up short, 49-29.

“We competed pretty well,” Liberal coach Mike Fowler said. “Hugoton is a very good team. I wanted to compete and I felt like we did a good job of that.”

The girls showcased more technique than previous years.

“Our girls are pretty tough this year,” Fowler said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to start the first girls program at Eisenhower, and those girls are seniors now. It’s been fun. I expect good things from them.”

Fowler also expects both teams to be their best at the end of the year.

“Our expectations are to put banners up on the wall, both teams,” he said. “The WAC is loaded. The girls are ranked five and Dodge and Garden are above us. If you can win WAC you can win State.”
