The Lady Redskins took to the mat Tuesday in The Big House and came away with a 44-29 win over Lamar, Colo,
Keirsie Carlile got the Lady Redskins off to a good start, and Liberal took advantage of several open weights and then earned wins at the upper weight classes to secure the win.
The Redskins also came away with a dual win over the Thunder after scoring a big come-from behind win in the 126 pound weight division when Aaron Muñoz was down 14-0 and was able to reverse his opponents and get a pin late in the match.
That sparked the Redskins to several middle weight victories and a 51-28 dual victory.
“It was fun to see a lot of these guys commit and keep working hard,” wrestling coach Sergio Borjas said. “You see a lot of these guys wrestle to the last second. They are fighting their butts off, and it showed.”
But the move that brough The Big House to its feet was Muñoz reversing when he was down 14-0 to get the pin.
“Aaron did a great job,” Borjas said. “When that kid got him in a hold, that would have been the last points, but he kept fighting and it was awesome to see that.”
Getting a dual win late in the season can be a momentum builder.
“These kids are wanting to buy in, and this will help,” Borjas said. “We wanted to win by six or 12, but all the coaches came together and worked hard for this one.”
The girls had to make some switches in some weight classes.
“We won the ones we were supposed to,” Borjas said.
Liberal travels to Garden City for a weekend tournament.
