TURPIN, Okla.—Two 7-0 runs to start and finish the second quarter gave the Turpin Lady Cardinals the surge they needed to upset No.19 Balko-Forgan 41-37 on homecoming night.

Balko-Forgan took control of the game early with a 10-2 run anchored by a defense that stifled the Lady Cardinals. Turpin senior Macee Strain kept the Lady Cardinals within striking distance with a pair of threes that left Turpin trailing only 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.

“We didn’t rebound very well at the start, and we need that to help us get out and run,” Lady Cardinals Head Coach Travis Smalts said. “When we did, we got some easy baskets. Their defense when they can set up has a lot of size and it’s pretty tough to go against. One of our points of emphasis was beating them down the court and once we started rebounding we were able to get out and run. That allowed us to set up our pressure defense and up the tempo of the game.”

Turpin took their first lead of the game (15-13) with 5:26 left to play in the half. A pair of baskets gave the Lady Bulls back the lead, but seven points in the quarter by senior Megan Weber helped Turpin take a 22-17 lead into the locker room.

Foul trouble became a concern in the third when Weber and Alissa Peters each picked up their third fouls. But Turpin was able to avoid any further foul issues and Peters scored twice in the final minute of the third to extend the Lady Cardinals lead to seven (30-23) heading to the final stanza.

Turpin extended their lead early in the fourth quarter to twelve (35-23) with five minutes remaining. Balko-Forgan made a final push, but Peters went 4-of-4 at the line in the final minutes to hold off the comeback.

Macee Strain led the Lady Cardinals with 13 points; Megan Weber added 11, Alissa Peters 8, Tatum Boyd 5, and Jada McGowan 4.

Turpin (9-6) will take on No.6 Arnett at Hennessey in the Skordle Festival at 12:15.
