TURPIN, Okla.— An eruption of sound from the homecoming crowd continued to escalate with each basket as Turpin clawed back from a double digit deficit. The sound hit it’s peak as the overtime buzzer sounded and the Cardinals celebrated a 60-57 win over their Beaver County rivals.

“The overall fight that the guys had tonight,” Cardinals Head Coach Tyler Karr said. “They never gave up even when we were down 12 going into the fourth. We kept playing our style with multiple presses and I feel like we eventually wore them down. We didn’t play our best game, but we did play hard.”

Trailing 42-30 to start the fourth quarter, Turpin relied on their relentless pressure defense that resulted in turnovers for the Bulls and baskets for the Cardinals. A 7-0 run made the score 46-40 in favor of the Bulls with 4:38 left in regulation. Carson Peters hit back-to-back threes to tie the game at 50 with 1:11 to play. Elijah Navarro got a steal and scored to give the Cardinals their first lead since 4:39 left in the second quarter. Balko-Forgan’s Keenan Daugherty sent the game to overtime when he converted both free throws with 3.5 seconds left.

Frankie Gonzales put the Bulls back on top (55-54) in overtime with a three with 3:37 left to play. Caine Cowan extended the lead to three (57-54 with 1:47 left. But Peters answered again with his fifth three of the game to knot it at 57 with 1:02 to play. Peters then grabbed a steal on the defensive end and scored to give the Cardinals the lead. Navarro added a free throw and the celebration began.

“Carson (Peters) is such a good leader,” Karr said. “The guys really feed off of him. He rushed himself early in the game but when he settled in he hit some big shots for us. Navarro did a great job running our offense and Jhett Huffman was big for us as well. How hard our seniors practice is what really sets the tone for our team. There were times when they could have folded but never quit.”

Back at the start of the game, the two teams traded baskets with Balko-Forgan taking an 8-9 lead after one. The Bulls went on a 7-0 run in the middle of the second and led 23-18 at the break. Three threes in a row by Balko-Forgan in the third extended the lead to double digits for the first time.

Carson Peters led all scorers with 25; Elijah Navarro added 21, and Jhett Huffman 12.

Turpin (12-2) will take on Arnett at Hennessey in the Skordle Festival at 1:30.
