The Redskins continued to struggle on the mound Tuesday and fell to 0-4 after a double header loss to Holcomb.
Skylar Hubbard started on the mound but couldn’t get out of the first inning after walking four and allowing two hits coupled with fielding miscues. Hubbard allowed six runs, none of them earned, before he was relieved by Alex Schwindt who was able to get the final out in the first.
The Redskins cut the lead to 6-2 after pushing a pair of runs across the plate. Liberal had a chance for more but left two runners stranded.
Schwindt pitched a shutout second inning, but the Redskins couldn’t cut into the lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Schwindt struggled with location in the third and also allowed the Longhorns to string together some hits, and Holcomb chased Schwindt off the mound after scoring five more runs.
Austin Dodge took the mound and was able to get the final out of the inning, but Liberal trailed 11-2.
Dodge gave up a run in the fourth but closed out the inning with Liberal trailing 12-2.
Ethan Olmstead followed with a scoreless fifth, and Liberal pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom half to cut the lead to 12-6.
The two teams traded runs in the sixth, and no one scored in the seventh in a 13-6 loss.
Liberal’s six pitchers combined to walk 14 while striking out three.
Schwindt led the Redskins at the plate with two of the team’s four hits. Marco Alonso scored twice.
In Game 2, the Redskins fell 11-5.
Liberal used four pitchers who combined for 12 walks and four strikeouts while giving up nine hits and 11 runs.
The Redskins had a better performance at the plate by belting out nine hits. Ethan Olmstead, Schwindt and Xavier Porras each had two hits. Dodge had two RBIs.
Liberal hosts Hugoton at 4 p.m. Friday.
