The Liberal Redskins traveled to Guthrie, Okla., Thursday for the first round of the Guthrie 89ers Tournament and came away with a first-round win over the host school, 4-2.

Brooks Kappelmann pitched the win, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine in five innings.

Zayden Martinez came on in relief in the sixth and final inning and did not allow a run or a hit while walking one and striking out three.

Liberal took a 1-0 in the second inning before Guthrie rallied for two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead.

The Redskins tied the game in the fourth and added two more runs in the top of the sixth before Martinez pitches a shutout sixth to secure the win.

Aiden Miramontes led the Redskins at the plate with two hits and an RBI.

Xavier porrs also had two hits in the win.

Kappelmann and Miramontes each had a double.

The Redskins outhit Guthrie 9-4, and while Liberal committed two errors, Guthrie had nine, making all four of Liberal’s runs unearned.

Liberal advanced to the semifinals Friday and wrapped up the three-day event Saturday.

Liberal moved to 6-6 on the season with the win and will host Russell/Victoria Tuesday at the National Beef Family Sports Complex.
